This was the first major battle on the Northern soil. Bloodiest one-day battle in all of U.S. History with 23,000 casualties. Although it wasn’t a decisive Union victory, it did give Lincoln an opportunity to strike at the Confederacy politically, psychologically, and economically. In the end the Union got a strategic victory.
