Oliver H. Kelley founded the National Grange of Patrons of Husbandry as a social and educational organization for farmers and their families.

As the Grange expanded, it became active in economics and politics to defend members against middlemen, trusts, and railroads. For example, Grangers established cooperatives, businesses owned and run by the farmers to save the costs charged by middlemen.
