The herald of the most commonly used modern antidepressants, and the first of the proper SSRIs, Prozac originated from a period of fledgling understanding of depression (and its association with serotonin). Operating by inhibiting serotonin reuptake in the mood centers of the brain, the entirety of the SSRI family generally sees employ in dealing with anxiety disorders, OCD analogues, and moderate to severe clinical (chronic) depression. Used in this fashion, these drugs are employed for months or years after the issue is declared solved, so as to prevent relapse, but this gradually increases the risk of developing Antidepressant Discontinuation Syndrome upon sudden stoppage. Strangely enough, when compared to placebos in efforts to deal with light-to-moderate depression, SSRIs had little difference in effect. However, SSRIs performed substantially better when dealing with severe-to-crippling depression. Unfortunately for the people who use these drugs, side effects are fairly substantial (with Prozac in particular), especially in those under the approximate age of 24 or 25: Suicidal thoughts / ideations, sleep problems, skin rashes, strange or unsettling dreams, reduced appetite, dry mouth, sexual dysfunctions, mania, seizures, and serotonin syndrome.
