The biggest theory is that a 9th century Arab shepherd named Kaldi noticed that his goats were incredibly hyper when they should have been sleeping, after consuming coffee berries. 600 years later, brewing of these berries came as the newest advent, and within the next century coffee became an export that spread throughout Europe amid the 1600’s. The hot debate with coffee, the same debate all drugs have, is over its effects, which people claimed made it a cure-all, but also claimed that it removed libido, caused impotence, and lead to emaciation. Regardless, about half a millennium of work into weighing pros and cons is pointing us in the direction of the positive, dropping rates of diabetes, Parkinson’s, cancer, and liver cirrhosis.
