On this day, Lebanon officially declared independence from France. It had been a French holding since World War I and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Lebanon has a unique government which gives equal representation to the various religious groups that live in the country. Unfortunately, Lebanon has struggled with civil war, foreign occupation, and violence for much of its history.
