On this day, Jordan declared independence from the United Kingdom. It had been a British Protectorate since the end of World War I. The Kingdom of Jordan occupied the West Bank for a couple decades before signing a peace treaty with Israel, making it one of the only Middle Eastern countries to do so. Jordan is a stable nation with a good economy, and has opened its doors to refugees from nearby countries.
