Based on a concept in the late 1960s, the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), an arm of the U.S. Defense Department, developed the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) to link computers at Pentagon-funded research institutions over telephone lines. It would later serve as the basis for the internet.
