They were unique in that they adapted Catholicism to fit Chinese tradition - missionaries studied Chinese traditions, culture, and languages to make Catholicism accessible to them. Emperor Kangxi supported the Jesuits, but controversy grew later and by the 18th century, Catholics in China were persecuted.
