One of the many reasons that caused the French Revolution was the fact that the 3rd estate had to pay all the taxes despite the fact that the other 2 estates had much more wealth. Tithes were taxes to the church in which one-tenth of wages were supposed to go toward; corvee was forced labor as a way to settle unpaid taxes; the taille was an income tax; the gabelle was a tax on salt.
