Americans feared that aliens would sympathize with the French rebels, so they enforced the Alien and Sedition Acts. These acts changed the number of years it takes to become a citizen from 5 to 14. In addition, it allowed for America to deport of arrest any aliens during war. Lastly, it made the speaking and printing of propaganda against the government illegal.
