In 1775, the ship that first sailed into the San Francisco Bay and discovered Alcatraz, San Carlos, was commanded by Juan Manuel de Ayala. He described the geological features of the multiple islands in the bay, noting how Alcatraz island was barren and rocky ("The Rock").
