The Great Schism is the name for the separation of the Roman and Byzantine pieces of the Christian church. The break happened because political, cultural, economic, and social as well as theological differences that originated before 1000. The strenght of the Mediteranian world was broken and became finally shattered after invasions from outisde forces caused them to crumble.
