Thirteenth Amendment Ratified- December 16th, 1865

The 13th Amendment to the Constitution officially ended slavery. And on December 16th, 1865, this amendment was ratified. The ratification came 8 months after the war had ended, but it symbolized the climax of the fight against slavery. In the start of the war, there were many people who thought the war was being fought to end slavery and were in support of it, while others were against slavery expanding but didn’t want to outlaw it. In 1862, Lincoln thought the Emancipation Proclamation must be passed, declaring slaves in the North were declared free. But when the 13th amendment was ratified, all slavery was banned forever.
