Jamestown was the first permanent colonial settlement in the Americas. This colony was sponsored by Virginia Company of London, who were investors hoping to make a profit from this adventure. The ship departed from England in December 1606 and reached Virginia in late April 1607. This ship carried 105 passengers and was led by Captain Christopher Newport. The passengers came ashore and began to work on their settlement. This event is important because it initiated lots of cultural encounters and helped shape the United States’ heritage today.
