The Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus, was supported by Spain to claim land in the Indies. He set sail on August 3rd, 1492 with three ships, the Santa María, the Pinta, and the Niña. He sighted land on October 3rd, 1492 and landed ashore that same day, landing in the Bahamas, and claiming that land for Spain. Later in the month, he set sail to find Cuba, which he thought was China, then in December saw Hispaniola, which he thought was Japan. He made a small colony there and returned to Spain with spices, "Indian Captives", and gold in April 1493 and was honored by the Spanish.
