The Missouri Compromise resulted from an argument concerning the voting power of political parties. Missouri, originally a territory, applied to join the union as a slave state (a state that legalized slavery). This would give slave states a representational advantage in Congress, so Maine was admitted as a free state, which allowed Missouri to join as a slave state without increasing the voting power for either group. From that point on, all states that entered the U.S. north of the southern border and to the west were to be considered free states.
