In July 1967, Nanaimo, Columbia hosted its first Bathtub Race and became known as The Bathtub Capital of the World! The idea was conceived to showcase Nanaimo to the world through a unique race of motorized bathtubs. The first race began in 1967 called "Nanaimo to Vancouver Great International World Championship Bathtub Race".
The races have since been transformed from “old silly bathtubs” to “high-tech speedboats", and the involvement of Australian participants have revolutionized the sport with their design for the vessels.
