14 out 1957 ano - First Canadian Awared Nobel Peace Prize
Descrição:
On October 14, 1957, Lester Pearson was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in resolving the Suez Crisis of 1956. Pearson becomes the first Canadian to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and the $40,000 that came with it.
Pearson's solution was to create a United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) which allowed UN troops to enter the red zone area, upon the withdrawal of the forces of the three aggressors.
On December 10, 1957, Lester travelled to Oslo, Norway to accept his prize. He reflected on the necessity of working "with all other men of goodwill in all countries of the world" for peace.
He later went on to become Canada's 14th prime minister, in office from 1963 to 1968.
