The election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 was one of the primary reasons for the Civil War. The south was very fearful that the Lincoln would restrict or outlaw the institution of slavery, and they ultimately decided to secede from the union before Lincoln had done anything. Lincoln’s election showed that the issue of slavery was getting to a boiling point, and that congress had failed to solve the issue before a Civil War erupted.
