Compromise in Congress that allowed California to enter the union as a free state, but the south was given compensation in new laws. However, the laws also increased tension over slavery, as neither side was fully satisfied with of the result. The compromise shows that Americans, while they were willing to compromise over slavery, the issue would persist until the Civil War.
