In April 1949, Canada, along with 11 other countries, signed the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO) marking a new era of economic ties with the United States of America.
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) was Canada's first peacetime military alliance, created in 1949. In more recent times, the organization has asserted all of its members’ in the global campaign against Islamic terrorism. NATO helped Canada create a defensive security arrangement with the United States, Britain and the nations of western europe by providing its forces against the Soviet Union.
NATO is not only a defining moment in Canadian identity because it was Canada's first military alliance. It also provided Canadian citizens with nationwide security and defence policy.
