Abraham Lincolns presidential platform was based around stopping the expansion of slavery, but allowing states that were already slave states to stay that way. Still, many southerners saw this as an attack and were afraid of Lincoln trying to take there slaves. His election was very controversial across the nation mainly because he did not win a single southern state and he only won 40% of the popular vote. His election is what caused the first southern states to secede because they were fearful of what Lincoln would do about slavery.
