This bloody crackdown in Shanghai, China began before sunrise on April 12, 1927, Nationalist Kuomintang ( KMT) leader Chiang Kai-shek attacked the Chinese Communist Party ( CCP) base in Shanghai because the Kuomintang saw a bigger threat from the CCP than from Japan since they realized the CCP were gaining power. There were thousands of people killed, arrested, or missing. Workers were shot and beheaded in the streets. The massacre killed approximately 5 to 6 thousand residents and the remaining members were forced to hide. This incident brought the following impact. To start with, the conservative KMT brought out a full-scale purge of their former Communists allies that were under their control. This split apart the left and right wings of KMT ( Chiang Kai-shek right at Nanjing and KMT government left). In addition, the massacre was dubbed as the “ White Terror”. Besides, it drew an end of KMT’s four years alliance with Soviet Russia and Chinese Communist party. While in charge of the massacre, Chiang had betrayed the Templar Order, which ensured stability and unity of China in order to get their supports. Moreover, this was a starting point of Chinese Civil War. Lastly, Chinese Communist Party had been forced to reassess their revolutionary strengths, strategies after this incident.
