13 abr 1919 ano - 13 April, 1919 Amritsar Massacre
Descrição:
On April 13, 1919, an astonishing massacre occurred in Punjab, India. This incident was named Massacre of Amritsar, also called Jallianwalla Bagh Massacre, (Jallianwalla is also spelled as Jallianwala). The battle began when at least 10 thousands of demonstrators, including men, women, and children, were meeting at Jallianwala Bagh. They were protesting the ban on public meetings and many had come to the city from the neighboring villages to celebrate Baisakhi, a spring festival. Unfortunately, such protest angered British governors. Therefore, governments sent British and Gurkha troops to fire on a large crowd of unarmed Indians in Amritsar. Dyer, the British commander, and his soldiers arrived and sealed off the exit. The troops opened fire without warning, on the crowd, shooting hundreds of rounds until they were out of bullets, killing at least 379 unarmed nationalists and wounding one thousand and two hundred or more. After they stopped firing, the armies withdrew right away, leaving behind the dead and wounded. It marked a turning point in India’s modern history in that it left a permanent scar on Indo-British relations and was the prelude to Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi’s full commitment to the cause of Indian nationalism and independence from Britain.
