The preaching of Abinadi touched his heart and he was converted. Alma was forced to flee for his life after he tried to convince the king not to kill Abinadi.

In hiding Alma wrote all that Abinadi had said, and it is from him that we get this portion of the record.
He then began to preach in secret and many hundreds were converted.
