22 maio 1856 ano - Bleeding Sumner
Descrição:
Upon acquiring more territory through the Mexican-American War, Northern and Southern states competed to create as many free and slave states in the west as they could. This created tension between the pro-slavery and anti-slavery states. After Charles Sumner, a Republican from Massachusetts, was talking badly about Andrew P. Butler, a pro-slavery senator from South Carolina, Butler proceeded to beat Sumner on the senate floor with his cane, almost killing him. This occurred on May 22, 1856 and became known as Bleeding Sumner. Many northerners saw Bleeding Sumner as a symbol of southern barbarity. The events of Bleeding Sumner showed how greatly divided the north and the south were.
