Jefferson decided to explore the land he acquired from the Louisiana Purchase. Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on an expedition mission to the Pacific. Lewis and Clark, along with forty-eight other men, left St. Louis on May 14, 1804 and headed northwest. During their travels, they encountered an Indian guide, known as Sacajawea, who helped them on their journey. By 1806, Lewis and Clark returned to St. Louis with information about the west. The travels of Lewis and Clark inspired Americans to migrate west.
