The Virginia Slave Codes of 1705 was the first extensive doctrine that regulated slavery based on race. It essentially stated that any Black slaves were permanent property of their owners and their needed to be no regulation on how master treated their slaves. It had many other point including regulation on interracial marriage and escaped slaves. The Codes were emulated by many other states and were a foundation for the racism and oppression of the African American community.
