Italy, being a part of the Allied Powers during the First World War, felt defeated after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, despite being one of the victors of the war. Italy gained lands after the Treaty of 1919, like Trieste, Trentino, the Istrian peninsula, and South Tyrol, but was promised many more lands due to the secret Treaty of London. This secret agreement promised Italy many lands from Austria-Hungary, helping them achieve Italian irredentism, the unification of all ethnic Italian lands. After they failed to gain more lands from the secret treaty, many citizens became disgruntled, causing them to shift their political beliefs to more radical ideologies. One of these Italians was Benito Mussolini, who became a fascist and led a far-right paramilitary group, known as the Blackshirts, towards revolution and on October 28 and 29, 1922, they marched towards Rome and on the 30th, the King of Italy handed Mussolini the title of premier, as a way to calm the violence in the country.
