Parisian people were poor and desperate for food (20% unemployment). July 14th, people panic hearing that the army is coming to Paris and the liberal finance minister is sacked. They decide to charge the Bastille prison to get guns and gunpowder to defend themselves. At the same time, peasants in the countryside rise against their feudal landlord, since the bread prices are too high. This caused the Great Fear , which was the fear of peasants that nobles would respond to this uprising very harshly. This fear caused the peasants to revolt even more out of self- defence. All of this caused Louis XVI to recall the army and the finance minister, again showing his weak decisions.
