Shortly after receiving his diploma at the Ealing School of Art, Bulsara joined Ibex, a Liverpool band influenced by Cream. A few days after the first meeting with the group, Freddie had memorized all the songs in the group's repertoire. His first public performance as a singer took place in Bolton on August 23, 1969 .
