This is the first US military conflict fought on foreign soil. Thomas Jefferson refused to send a tribute so Tripoli declares war. They defeat Tripoi and William Bainbridge's ship is taken prisoner and used against the US Navy. in 1804 Stephen Decatur sets the ship on fire so that Algiers cannot use it against them anymore. Presley O'Bannon marches to Tripoli and takes their fortress, the Derna. In June the Bey of Tripoli signs a peace treated for 60,000 and returns the American slaves, promising a free passage for US ships. in 1806 a Tripoli monument was carved in the US, the oldest military monument.
