The Black Legend was propaganda that demonized Spain and accused them of Spanish colonial cruelty. Other European powers accused Spain of using unnecessary and cruel acts in the Americas. Saying that they were cruel to slaves and native people. This propaganda that demonized Spain was created due to Spain’s success in the Americas. This legend led to a political debate. Bartolome de Las Casas argued that Spain should treat the natives more humanely. He helped improve the treatment of natives.
