The Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) icreated. ARPA was a small computer network developed in the United States, with just a few nodes at military and academic sites.

The related ARPANET network was first developed as a response to the launch of the Sputnik-1 satellite by the Soviet Union in 1957, which stoked American fears of Soviet weapons technology.
