The Gang of Four was an effort by Zhang Chunqiao, Wang Hongwen, Yao Wenyuan, and Mao’s wife, Jiang Qing to take control of the cultural side of the Cultural Revolution. These “Seizures of Power” became a daily occurrence in schools, factories, and neighborhoods around the country. Daily events went out-of-hand as far as removing trained horses and sending them down to the countryside. In late 1967, Mao called on the PLA to restore order by merging the Red Guards and the politically acceptable CCP members.
