Who was he?

He was a German-Jewish physician and scientist who worked in the fields of hematology, immunology, and antimicrobial chemotherapy.

He was born in Strzelin, Poland in 1854

Later in life he ended up winning the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his contributions to immunology.

Contributions:

- He discovered a new type of cell in the protoplasm (A type of plasma cell) and named these cells Mast Cells (Which comes from the German word for an animal-fattening feed)

- In 1909 he is credited for finding the cure of Syphilis

- He also invented the precursor technique to Gram staining bacteria.

- He helped the development of an antiserum to combat diphtheria and conceived a method for standardizing therapeutic serums.

- Ehrlich developed staining tissue methods that made it possible to distinguish between different types of blood cells which in turn led to the capability to diagnose numerous blood diseases.
