The first four trading posts which were the Moose Factory (1673), followed by Fort Albany (1674), Fort Severn (1680) and York Factory (1684). HBC traders established relationships with the aboriginal people who transport European goods to their trading partners who live further inland. All four of the forts were managed by a Factor, (a company agent, or a deputy or representative.) The annual supply ships serving the trading posts sail north along England’s east coast stopping at the Orkney Islands for water and supplies before crossing the North Atlantic. The young men from Orkney, who are recruited for service its companies services go on the boats for five years and get paid £6 pounds a year.
