The reason Austria declared war is that a month earlier, on June 28, 1914, a Serbian nationalist student named Gavrilo Princip, assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Since a Serbian killed the Austro-Hungarian leader, Austria-Hungary declared war. The war might never have started without this event.
