the USA's first successful spy satellite that included a functional photographic surveillance system. the satellite would drop a film canister than would be collected and processed to produce images of USSR development (11's failed to be retrieved, the first successful retrieval was with Discoverer 13). this one weighed 1741.65 pounds and was also launched on a Thor rocket.
