(1)landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court issued in 1896. It upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation laws for public facilities as long as the segregated facilities were equal in quality – a doctrine that came to be known as "separate but equal".

(2)Homer Plessy – who was seven-eighths Caucasian – agreed to participate in a test to challenge the Act. Plessy, who was technically black under Louisiana law, sat in a "whites only" car of a Louisiana train, refused to vacate the car and was arrested; Judge John Ferguson
