While the societies in the Americas were establishing themselves and their culture, Christopher Columbus was on his way to find an alternate route to India for trade purposes. He was supported strongly by Isabella and Ferdinand, the then royalty of Spain. On his first voyage he landed in the Bahamas, and then Central and South America during the following voyages. He made himself governor of the territories he came across and continued to send people back to these places to collect gold and establish themselves on the land. Key Concept 1.2.1
