Student protests began on April 15 1989 over corruption and democracy in China under Deng Xiaoping. The protests gathered nearly 1 million people at its peak, which prompted Deng Xiaoping to enact a crackdown on June 4th, sending military troops and tanks to control and disperse the protestors. The incident turned violent, and an upper estimated 10 thousand protestors were killed. Deng Xiaoping was criticized for his use of deadly force in the incident.
