1 jan 1958 ano - Great Leap Forward

Descrição:

The Great Leap Forward was a campaign by Mao Zedong from 1958-1962 that aimed to convert China's economy from agricultural to industrial. However, it is often blamed for causing the Great Chinese Famine due to its extreme movement to industry over farming. Food production stalled, but farmers lied to state officials and said they were meeting quotas, causing a shortage. The policy of "close planting" enforced by the state also caused further food shortage as plants were not getting sufficient nutrients and were overcrowded. Estimates say that the Great Leap Forward caused tens of millions of deaths, with upper estimates around 50 million. The Great Leap Forward caused a regression in the Chinese economy and prompted Mao to start the Cultural Revolution in 1966.
