The 1876 fire on July 4th “gutted the business center of Amherst” (Johnson). Dickinson described her experience to the Norcross sisters in both unsettling detail and abstraction: “I could hear buildings falling, and oil exploding… It seemed like a theatre, or a night in London, or perhaps like chaos.”
