After Jerusalem and other parts of the east fell to the Muslims, Byzantine Emperor Alexis I asked for help. At the Council of Clermont in 1095, Pope Urban II issued the call, promising forgiveness of sins. The first crusade was chaotic, but largely successful, but these cities and lands fell back into Muslim hands eventually.
