To achieve taking over most of Africa, the English used military power. They also caused rivalries and had a strong sense of nationalism. Europe took over Africa for raw resources, more customers and markets, money and the need to "educate the savages". At the end of Europe's reign of Africa, they made sure that the lands with rivalries were with each other.
