Eberth was the first to describe the bacillis believed to cause typhoid fever while Gaffky is the one who then named it later, Eberthella typhi, later renamed salmonella enterica. Typhoid fever, a disease spread through the fecal -oral route (though it can also be passed through urine as well as feces), is a potentially life threatening disease that involved a sustained fever of 103-104 degrees as well as symptoms that can include diarrhea, weakness, stomach pain, rose colored rashes, and delirium. It takes time and in 10-20% of cases that are untreated it is fatal, meaning as many as 1 in 5 people who get typhoid fever and don't get proper treatment will die of it.
