Latif was forced to resign shortly after another bloody Baath coup in 1968 against General Abdul Rahman Arif, after which Ahmad Hassan al-Bakr and Saddam Hussein became respectively president and vice-president. Al Ani’s participation in state communications can be divided into the period before Saddam Hussein became a force on the political scene and the period afterwards, during which events unfolded that enabled him to take full power in 1979.
