Hong Kong was the last true colony of Great Britain. It had been a symbol of British power managing to overtake mighty China in the opium wars. On the first of July 1997, the United Kingdom gave the city of Hong Kong back to China following a 100-year-old treaty. On that night the sun truly did set on the British Empire.
