Following the establishment of the "Cult of the Supreme Being", a civic quasi-religious establishment intended to moralize the population of France (a new replacement of Christianity), Robespierre begins his political downturn.
Robespierre was central figure in the Committee of Public safety. He pressed for unrelenting republican values and found major support from the sans-culottes. He readily reflects Rousseau's extremist democratic ideals of an unselfish and secular government. Most evidently, his policies of terror in the name of republican fueled his short but radically bloody political prominence.
In the winter of 1794, Robespierre turns the Terror onto his competing republican contemporaries. He executed extremist enrages who sought to further regulate prices. He accused others of being "insufficiently militant" and profiting off the revolution (also executing these political figures).
Later in the Convention, Robespierre causes other leaders of conspiring against him and the revolution. By eliminating his enemies (or really his compatriots) without amassing much support, the leaders of the convention remove him from the picture, as they too are threatened by his presence.
